Greetings Village School Community!
With a mere four and a half weeks left of school before summer vacation, we’re really feeling things heat up around here (literally and figuratively!). We’re already halfway through May, though the May Day celebration seemed like it was just yesterday.
Did you know that cellophane was invented over a hundred years ago by a Swiss chemist named Jacques Brandenberger? It was originally made to make cloth more resistant to spills and it was made from wood cellulose. I wonder what Jacques would think if he knew how prolific his invention would become and whether he would be disappointed to see how much of it ends up in landfills, forests, and the ocean? While we’re on the subject, an important announcement from the environmental club:
Over the past four weeks, students from Kindergarten through 8th grade participated in our loose plastic collection competition. Together, our school collected about 165 pounds of plastic, helping keep waste out of landfills, rivers, and oceans and helping protect wildlife and the environment. And now for the results…
3rd place: Kindergarten with about 20.7 pounds
2nd place: 5th grade with about 39.4 pounds
1st place: 3rd grade with an amazing 65.9 pounds collected!
Congratulations to the 3rd graders! Your reward will be a popsicle and popcorn party, which will be arranged soon.
Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make a difference for our planet! It was truly cool to see all the collections coming in to be recycled. Thanks for the Environmental Club and a big thanks to Jared White for advising the VSEC on their first successful project!
Sincerely,
Roz, Shannon, and Andy
Thank You
Thank you so much for spoiling us on staff appreciation week with beautiful cards, flowers, and a delicious breakfast and lunch! We truly felt the love and are so grateful to have you as our amazing community!

Coming Together for a School Family

Greek Games
The 5th graders participated in the annual Greek Games at the Corvallis Waldorf School. They worked hard in preparation for this event, and were rewarded with a gorgeous day where team spirits were high. Thank you so much to Ms. Merrily and Mr. Logan for leading this event, and for our wonderful parent volunteers who supported the class!
Annual Giving Campaign - Commemorative Tiles

Our first round of commemorative tiles are on display just outside the office. Our long term plan is to create a more permanent display once we get more tiles. You can order a tile at https://polarengraving.com/eugenevillageschool or use the following QR Code:

With a tile purchase, you will help us towards our goal of raising funds to install a new merry go round. We hope you'll join our efforts!
Village Kitchen News

Thanks go to UO student volunteer, Ryan, who prepped locally grown, organic strawberries this week for our breakfast berry sauce.
Looking to fulfill your volunteer hours for the school year?
We have a couple of bi-weekly spots we'd love to fill with helpers for the remaining couple months of the school year. Contact Toña at taguilar@eugenevillageschool.org or pop by the kitchen to say hi and get more information.
