Administrator's Message
Greetings Village School Community,
On May 28th, 1936, Alan Turing submitted a paper titled On Computable Numbers to the London Mathematical Society. This paper imagined a machine that could compute, long before modern computers existed. Prior to Turing’s paper, people mostly believed that computing or calculating was clearly tied to human minds. In the experience of that time, a mathematician worked through symbols using attention, memory, judgment, and paper. Turing wondered how far that process could be pared down: can we strip “following instructions” down to simple mechanical actions for a machine?
In his paper, Turing proved that any exact, step-by-step procedure can be translated into a mechanical process and fed to a machine, which can repeat the process. This was revolutionary thinking, because it showed that any mathematical procedure that can be pared down to an algorithm can be computed by a machine, as long as the instructions are clear. This new finding was the foundation of modern day computers and even artificial intelligence.
Alan Turing is arguably one of the most influential people of the twentieth century and is considered by many to be the father of theoretical computer science. Whether or not one believes that computers are an improvement on human-kind, Turing’s advancements in mathematics, philosophy, biology, cryptography, and computer science are undeniable. When he submitted that paper on May 28th, 1936, Turing opened a door to a whole new world, one we are still pushing through today.
Ninety years later, as AI is becoming more commonplace, our priority has been to minimize children’s exposure to computers, especially in grades K-5. We are committed to an education that connects children to the arts, the real world and the community. The countries of Sweden and Finland have made a move in this direction, and now we’re even hearing from the current Surgeon General about risks associated with excessive screen time. Computers are definitely useful tools, but as we’ve been saying, in moderation.
Hoping you’re staying safe and healthy,
Sincerely,
Roz, Shannon, and Andy
Three Cheers for Volunteers!
To all of our incredible volunteers, thank you from the bottom of our heart for all of the time, energy, and love you have poured into our school community this year. You are the reason we are able to to offer so many of the wonderful things we do, like the phenomenal school lunches, the Handwork program, the many field trips that the students get to enjoy, the yearly plays that each grade performs, and the beautiful events that are a staple of the Village School experience. There are so many other ways that you help our school to thrive.
We also want to take a moment to thank our fabulous class coordinators and Village Community Council heads, who go above and beyond to make so much magic happen throughout the year.
We loved getting the chance to celebrate and thank our volunteers at our Volunteer Appreciation Coffee & Pastries gathering this past week. It was lovely getting to see your smiling faces, to see you connect with one another, and to enjoy some treats together.
You truly make our school special, and we are beyond grateful for each and every one of you!

7th Grade Play
The 7th graders put on a stellar production of "The Wizard of Oz". They had an extra short rehearsal time, but they really came together and performed beautifully! Bravo!
After School Sewing
Students have been working hard in Maestra Sarah's after school enrichment sewing class to finish up their projects. Calliope made adorable PJ pants and Ofelia, a fancy new apron!

6th Grade Camping Trip
The 6th graders went on their annual camping trip where they hiked to the hot springs at Paulina Lake, visited the Sunriver Observatory and toured the Lava Lands. They camped at Big River Campground in Central Oregon, and enjoyed plenty of s'mores.
6th Grader Finn said, "My favorite part was definitely going to the hot springs and the lake because they were so cool to experience. Personally I have never experienced a hot spring that hot, they were up to 140 degrees. And the view was amazing, of the mountains with a snowy peak. It was a great bonding experience for the class as a whole. We roasted marshmallows in the campfire and it was really fun."
Annual Giving Campaign - Commemorative Tiles

Our first round of commemorative tiles are on display just outside the office. Our long term plan is to create a more permanent display once we get more tiles. You can order a tile at https://polarengraving.com/eugenevillageschool or use the following QR Code:

With a tile purchase, you will help us towards our goal of raising funds to install a new merry go round. We hope you'll join our efforts!
Village Kitchen News

There are always a lot of field trips at the end of the school year which means many sack lunches get packed up before the 8:25 bell. Big thanks today to our sack lunch helpers from the 7th grade, Aloysius and Sagan, who put the carrots and grapes in each sack lunch bag.

Last week, the 6th grade class submitted a petition to bring our tofu pad thai back. Serendipitously, we have it on the menu for this Friday! We will also be making and serving mango lassis as a special treat that day. Yum!

Coming Together for a School Family
Our Village School community is coming together to support Ashley and her children after a sudden death in their family. This fundraiser helps provide stability and care during a difficult time. If you're able, please consider donating or sharing to help surround their family with support.

Safety Inquiry from A Village School Family
There was very minor car accident on 35th avenue the morning of Wednesday May 20th, around 8:20AM. One of our students was exiting a car when another car driven by a non Village School person bumped their door. It would help a lot with the settlement of this situation if any one who witnessed the accident could reach out to Alyssa at (541) 515-0157.
Handwork Happenings
As we wrap up the school year, students are finishing up their handwork projects, as well.
Check out these beautiful projects (clockwise from left) made by Zephyr, Juniper, Finn, Leander, Logan, Peregrine, Jane, and Clementine!
LTD Passes
Summer break is almost here! To help families save on transportation costs and offer youth a safe, reliable way to explore, LTD passes are good through the summer. Youth K-12 can ride all LTD buses free through October 15, 2026, with the student transit pass.
