Administrator's Message

Greetings Village School Community!

OSAS testing is coming up! Parents may submit an opt-out form at any time. Preferably the forms are submitted to Angelique in the Village School Office, on paper or via email (angelique.brennan@eugenevillageschool.org) 30 days prior to the administration of the tests.  If you have any questions please send an email to principal@eugenevillgeschool.org.

Here are the opt out forms:

What’s a notable event for March 11th in history? Glad you asked! March 11th, 1811 was the first of many actions organized by a group later referred to as the Luddites. The introduction of automated machinery pushed many English textile weavers out of work. The Luddites, named after a mythical leader "Ned Ludd", broadened their campaign until the military intervened.

The term Luddite has come to be associated with someone who is opposed to technology, but in fact, the Luddites were less concerned with the actual machines and more that they were being used to increase profit without concern for the people involved. However, the next time someone calls you a Luddite, you can let them know that that just means you care about quality textiles and workers rights! Nobody can argue with that.

Hoping your upcoming Ides of March is sunny and joyfilled,

Sincerely,

Roz, Shannon, and Andy

Book Exchange Tomorrow!

Dear Village School Families,

Welcome to the annual ALL SCHOOL BOOK EXCHANGE.  To allow for all students to have the opportunity to pick out a few preloved books to read over the vacation, we need as many people as possible to donate books that are no longer read in the household.  However, it is not necessary to donate books for your child to participate.

The Details:

  • Students bring in books on or before 8:30 a.m. tomorrow - Thursday, March 12

  • Brown paper bags have been sent home with all students.  Books do not need to be returned in the bags if your bag didn’t make it home, or is too small.

  • Each classroom will visit the book exchange on Thursday to choose books.  The number of books per student is dependent on how many books in total are donated, schoolwide.

Thank you so much!

Maestra Sarah (Lewenberg)

Author's Night Tomorrow!

Author's night will take place on Thursday, 3/12 from 5:30pm-7:30pm for 1st -5th graders and their families. Children read from their own writings. It's one of several opportunities for our students to practice their writing and speaking skills for an audience. We'll have pizza dinner ahead of time.

We still need:

  • A couple of volunteers to help with cleanup after Author's Night. This would mean watching your child read, and them heading back to the Commons to help our Title staff with tidying up.

Please let Chrissy know if you can help with any of these.

Traffic Safety at Drop Off and Pickup

Please review the drop off and pick up policy below and be mindful of children crossing the street on 35th avenue. There have been reports of close calls at both pick up and drop off. Thank you!

Handwork Happenings

Koda (and Ms Bee), Greyson, Lucy, Xochi, Nolan, Harper, Oriah, Rise and Paz show off their beautiful, finished Handwork projects!

Middle School Dance

It was another great middle school dance filled with music, dancing, and time with friends. Thank you so much to the parent volunteers who made this evening possible! The kids had a blast!

Annual Giving Campaign - Merry-Go-Round

We have brought in $6,000 towards our $10,000 goal for a new merry-go-round, so we are gaining momentum to reaching our goal! We hope you will join us in our efforts to install new playground equipment at The Village School. You can support the campaign if you go to Annualgiving.us or follow the QR code below:

Village Kitchen News

Yesterday for lunch we had mac & cheese, a favorite for many. Upon being served lunch, Kindergarten student, Evelyn, let us know "Today is my actual favorite day."

If you look carefully at Evelyn's lunch tray you will see she added sunflower seeds to her grated carrot. A few times a week we offer sunflower seeds on our condiment line which many adults like to sprinkle over their salads and a growing number of children like to nibble on for a crunchy side option.

Sunflower seeds are a nutritionally dense whole food, power-packed with protein, fiber, vitamin E, folate, minerals, healthy fats, and phytochemicals. We get ours from Hummingbird Wholesale right here in Eugene where they roast the seeds and lightly season them with unrefined sea salt mined from an ancient seabed in Utah where it’s safe from modern pollutants.

8th Grade Field Trip

The 8th graders spent a day at the confluence of the North and Coast forks of the Willamette with their Walk-a-Thon partner, McKenzie River Trust. They tended to the land, removed blackberry bushes, and enjoyed the gorgeous weather.

State Testing (OSAS)

Under Oregon law, a parent or student age 18+ may opt out of Oregon’s annual statewide math and language arts assessments by filling out an annual opt-out form, which starting this year can be submitted online. Exemptions from the English language proficiency (for students whose primary language is not English) or science tests may also be requested based on a student’s disability or religious beliefs.  We will only be accepting online opt-out forms for English and Math until we return from spring break. If you would like your 5th or 8th grader to opt-out of the Science testing, you must fill out a paper form and return that to us. The template for this and the online opt-out form for English & Math can be found below, along with some other helpful information:
