Administrator's Message

Greetings Village School Community,

Did anyone set their alarm to check out the Blood Moon lunar eclipse early on Tuesday morning? It was, admittedly, a little cloudy, but still thrilling to witness. I am nanoscopic when compared to the moon, much less the sun, but I can stand in my tiny backyard with my blanket, looking though my infinitesimal eyes and see the giant sloping shadows cross, offering incontrovertible proof that I am, in fact, standing on a massive rock, speeding through infinite space and time, with other giant bodies.

Speaking of massive, here’s a giant shoutout to sixth graders Eowyn LaClair and Wren Perron, as well as our VS librarian Molly Bautista, for requesting and procuring American Sign Language books for our library! I learned something new today: ASL is the third most common language used in the United States, after Spanish and English! We think it’s fantastic that our students are interested in learning ASL! Nice work.

Last but not least, OSAS testing is right around the corner! Parents may submit an opt-out form at any time. Preferably the forms are submitted 30 days prior to the administration of the tests. If you have any questions please send an email to principal@eugenevillgeschool.org. Here are the opt out forms:

Thank you for being a part of our community!

Sincerely,

Roz Romatz

Book Exchange

Dear Village School Families,

Welcome to the annual ALL SCHOOL BOOK EXCHANGE.  To allow for all students to have the opportunity to pick out a few preloved books to read over the vacation, we need as many people as possible to donate books that are no longer read in the household.  However, it is not necessary to donate books for your child to participate.

The Details:

  • Students bring in books on or before 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 12

  • Brown paper bags have been sent home with all students.  Books do not need to be returned in the bags if your bag didn’t make it home, or is too small.

  • Each classroom will visit the book exchange on Thursday to choose books.  The number of books per student is dependent on how many books in total are donated, schoolwide.

  • Maestra Sarah is looking for volunteers to help with set up and clean up:

    • 2 volunteers on Wednesday, 3/11 from 1:30pm - 3:00pm to sort through and set up the books.

    • 2 volunteers on Thursday, 3/12 from 12:00pm - 1:30pm to help with cleanup

  • For questions or if you would like to volunteer to help, email: chrissy@eugenevillageschool.org or sarah.lewenberg@eugenevillageschool.org

Thank you so much!

Maestra Sarah (Lewenberg)

Author's Night

Author's night will take place on Thursday, 3/12 from 5:30pm-7:30pm for 1st -5th graders and their families. Children read from their own writings. It's one of several opportunities for our students to practice their writing and speaking skills for an audience. We'll have pizza dinner ahead of time.

We need:

  • A few volunteers to help with cleanup after Author's Night. This would mean watching your child read, and them heading back to the Commons to help our Title staff with tidying up.

Please let Chrissy know if you can help with any of these.

Annual Giving Campaign - Merry-Go-Round

We have brought in $6,000 towards our $10,000 goal for a new merry-go-round, so we are gaining momentum to reaching our goal! We hope you will join us in our efforts to install new playground equipment at The Village School. You can support the campaign if you go to Annualgiving.us or follow the QR code below:

Village Kitchen News

On Fridays, students often bring gifts from the school garden. We are blessed to have a beautiful school garden and a fabulous garden coordinator, Taylor Zeigler. This week, children surprised us with eggs from the school chickens. Look at these joyful faces!

On Tuesday, parent volunteer, Plaedo, prepared the last of the beets harvested from the school garden for grating. Occasionally we have grated beets and grated carrots on the salad bar. Beets are loaded in vitamins and minerals. Some students have also discovered they can make their milk pink by mixing in some grated beets. What a creative way to increase their vegetable intake!

State Testing (OSAS)

Under Oregon law, a parent or student age 18+ may opt out of Oregon’s annual statewide math and language arts assessments by filling out an annual opt-out form, which starting this year can be submitted online. Exemptions from the English language proficiency (for students whose primary language is not English) or science tests may also be requested based on a student’s disability or religious beliefs.  We will only be accepting online opt-out forms for English and Math until we return from spring break. If you would like your 5th or 8th grader to opt-out of the Science testing, you must fill out a paper form and return that to us. The template for this and the online opt-out form for English & Math can be found below, along with some other helpful information:

Free Dental Clinic for Kids 5 & Up on March 7th(free stuffed animals too).

“Our dental hygiene students love kids,” says Michelle Cummins, Lane Community College’s Dental Hygiene Program Coordinator. The abundant stuffed animals with toothy grins decorating the entry way of the brightly-lit clinic seem to agree. Both the toys and the students are ready for Lane’s free, upcoming Dental Clinic for Kids on March 7th.

The clinic is part of “Give Kids a Smile,” a nationwide event in coordination with the American Dental Association Foundation. Under the careful supervision of volunteer dentists and Lane instructors, dental hygiene students will give children ages 5 to 18 free evaluations, sealants, fluoride, x-rays, and preventative dentistry.

Free appointments for kids 5-18 are available anytime between 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on March 7th, but expected to fill quickly. Interested parents should call the Lane Dental Clinic at 541-463-5206 to reserve their child’s spot today. Patients of all ages can call the same number to book low-cost appointments during regular hours.
