Administrator's Message

Greetings Village Community!

What a glorious (cold!) week we’ve had! The new HVAC system and Carrie, our good ole’ fashioned boiler, have kept us warm and toasty. Entering the school each morning feels like a giant hug.

Dia de los Muertos was such a great event! We had a HUGE turnout. The Mariachi Band was lively and the student performances were all very sweet. The ofrenda was beautiful and the crafts and face painting tables were well populated. One thing of note: we have been trying for a number of years to reduce the number of students playing on campus (on the playground, in the gaga ball pit, in the hallways, etc.) away from their parents during these family oriented activities. Children running amuck causes a lot of unnecessary chaos and as well, is very unsafe. We will continue to ask parents to keep their families together at after school events. If it seems like the energy is too high or the students have run out of time from their let’s stay together bank, it may be time to leave the event. Please help us keep our after school events calm, safe, and fun for all.

This Tuesday is Walk & Roll to school! Your students are encouraged to come on foot, scoot, skate, bike, take a bus, or hoverboard to school. This event is meant to encourage health and wellbeing, both of those participating and the Earth! We are always happy to see the number of students (and families!) that participate in this event.

Last but not least, don’t forget to bring in Walk-A-Thon earnings! The non-profit organizations and our school thank you.

Día de Los Muertos

Celebramos el Día de los Muertos

We had a fantastic celebration of Dia de los Muertos this past week. Our wonderful volunteers and 8th graders were the heart and soul of this evening, decorating the beautiful Ofrenda, helping with set up, clean up, prepping and serving the delicious meal, face painting and making crafts with the younger students. Mariachi de Sol from Springfield played an amazing set, and our students put on some fantastic performances, which they spent weeks rehearsing for. It was truly wonderful to see families come together in the Village School spirit!

Walk & Roll - November 8th

Our rescheduled Walk & Roll to School Day will be happening on November 8th. We'll be joining children and adults worldwide in a celebration of walking and biking to school! There are so benefits to taking alternate modes of transportation, and we're lucky to live in a fantastic city for getting around by foot or by bike. The class with the highest participation will get to proudly display the Golden Bicycle, and will also get to make and enjoy some refreshing smoothies!

See below for a map of safe routes to school.

Walkathon

We are rapidly approaching our Walkathon goals of raising $12,000! If you have pledges to turn in, please do so as soon as you can. Funds can be turned into the office or via village.raisely.com

Title I Reading Celebration Event

Mark your calendars! On the evening of Dec. 1, Title I will be sponsoring a Reading Celebration Reading Event. There will be activities, prizes, a guest speaker, Scholastic Book Fair and food!

Watch the Village Voice for more details soon!

8th Grade Fundraiser

To support the 8th grade trip, there will be wreaths for sale: locally made with multiple fresh greenery juniper berries and cones for $28. Pre-sales are going on now through 11/21.

Ways you can order:

  • Find an 8th grader and order directly from them.

  • Order online at the village school store

  • We will have a table set up outside the office for any last sales, as well as for pickup.

We are hoping to be able to hand out wreaths on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

Student Helpers

On Fridays we get student helpers from 5th grade, who help us in the office. Gwen and Vela took care of our recycling!

Volunteering!

As we work toward reuniting our Village School community, more opportunities to volunteer are coming up! Be sure to watch your email, the Village Voice and the Village Vine for messages from Parent Council, your class coordinator, your child's teacher and the Village School Kitchen, to see the volunteer needs that are coming up for you to enjoy. Some upcoming events that need volunteer help are:

  • Reading Celebration Event

  • Winter Concert

If you haven't filled out your volunteer paperwork yet, please stop by the office to pick up a packet.

Another way to contribute to our school community is by attending Parent Council Meetings! Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, November 8th at 5:30 PM. We are still holding these meetings by Zoom so they are easy to attend (even while making dinner or folding laundry) and every parent and guardian's voice is valued in decisions about what Parent Council funds are used for, events that are held and collaborations with departments and teachers at the Village School!

We adore our volunteers! Village School would not be what it is without you. Thank you so much for making Village School the incredible community it is!

Don't forget to sign in to HelpCounter and report your hours so we can see the amazing contributions from our Village School Families

The Village Kitchen

November Breakfast and Lunch Menus are now available to view below!

Free and Reduced Lunch

Please Check and See If You Qualify!

The new free and reduced lunch income requirements have been significantly expanded so please apply, even if you think you may not qualify!

If you have not yet done so, take a moment to complete the Free and Reduced Lunch Application. Our school’s Title I funding is based on the number of qualified households we have, so it is crucial that everyone see if they qualify. If you do not qualify for free meals, payments can be made in the office or at schoolpaymentportal.com.

If you qualify via direct certification (ie, food stamps), you should have received a letter confirming eligibility for free meals. Please let us know if you have not received this letter.

Contact Tristin in the office for details at office@eugenvillageschool.org

Parent Council

The next Parent Council Meeting will be on Tuesday, November 8th at 5:30pm!

Please join us and send questions and ideas to parentcouncil@eugenevillageschool.org.

The notes from past meetings can be found here.

Every Village School parent and guardian is a part of Parent Council - The Virtual Parent Council Meetings are open to all parents and guardians on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.

You can also engage with Village School families on the Parent Council Facebook page, The Village Vine!

Village School Lunch Diaries

Wednesdays are Yumm Bowl days! All of the dressings, salsa and hot sauces are made from scratch in the Kitchen!

On sandwich day you can choose from a hummus or cheese or PB&J sandwich. This week we had roasted potatoes and sweet watermelon on the side. The salad bar always stocks fresh greens and other delicious veggies.

A favorite of many is the orange tamari tofu sushi rice. Savory tofu on top of rice with a few sheets of nori seaweed for wrapping up with crunchy carrot and cucumber sticks. It's especially yummy with a drizzle of toasted sesame oil and a sprinkle of sesame seeds and green onions.
