Administrator's Message

Dear Village School Families,

As we all continue to process the heartbreaking tragedy that took place at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend last Thursday, please know we continue to do everything we can to keep our students, teachers, and staff safe at school. When a crisis like this occurs, it can bring up a variety of emotions and questions. We are available to talk if you need, and have staff available to talk with students, as well.

One of my daughters lives in Bend, and works just a block away from Silver Rail Elementary. We talked on the phone over the weekend about the event. She wondered how I was doing, as a school principal, but I was more concerned about her, having been so close by when the shooting occurred. It was emotionally difficult for us to talk about the profound grief those directly affected must be experiencing. We reminded each other that feeling deep empathy for others is a good thing, and at the same time we could go on with our own plans - take that weekend road trip, go to that dinner party, celebrate life in the things we do everyday. We can continue to seek joy while holding others in our hearts.

We appreciate those of you that have reached out with questions about the safety of our campus, and the protocols we take to educate staff and students on how we will respond to threats on campus. Every fall we review these protocols, conduct drills throughout the year, and discuss ways we can make improvements. Our staff takes this very seriously and is committed to protecting students in the best way possible.

Please continue to reach out with questions or concerns.

Take care,

Shannon and Andy

Village Kitchen

Tomorrow morning, Village School students and staff will be participating in Oregon's Farm to School Crunch at Once event. We will join over 40,000 people who will all be biting into an Oregon grown fruit or vegetable during the school day to support and celebrate locally grown produce. Here at our school, participants will be biting into a special apple variety called Mountain Rose. These apples are pink inside!

We could use help cutting apples for the younger students in the morning. If you are able to swing by the kitchen between 8:30-9:15 to lend a hand, you can try the Mountain Rose apple yourself and help create a fun moment for students.
