Administrator's Message
Dear Village School Families,
It’s picture week at school! If your child missed the day with their class, let the office and their teacher know so we can be sure they get their picture taken on Friday!
I remember picture days in elementary and middle school very well. The photographer’s assistants would bring each of us a small black plastic comb while we waited in line. I guess they wanted to ensure our feathered bangs were just right. They’d go through the line adjusting the colored bobbles that held up pigtails, tucked wayward curls, and made sure kids took off their coats. I would quickly forget about the event until many weeks later our pictures would arrive in cellophane envelopes. As my homeroom teacher passed them out, I was terribly afraid of anyone looking at them before I did. Heaven forbid any classmates see a bad picture of me! As usual, some were good, and some were bad. But decades later, whether good or bad, these portraits place each of us in a time and space that is extremely fleeting. Cherish those photos!
Check out the old school photos of some staff below. Can you tell who is pictured, and what grade they were in? (Answers are at the bottom of the newsletter!)
Back to School Packet 2026-27

Community Service Walkathon - Get Your Donations & Pledges In!
We would like to thank staff and volunteers who helped us with the Walk-a-thon last week. It's a big undertaking and the students have a great time. We were fortunate to have good weather and clear skies. This year's goal is to raise at least $16,000. Half of this will help The Village Kitchen. The other half will support eight local environmental education organizations, one assigned to each class.
Students have received pledge packets, but pledging can also be done with Online Pledge System: VillageWalkathon.org. Through the online platform, you can set up your own site, create a family team, and refer people to it . It's easy to circulate this to a circle of family members or friends. Here are some photos from the event. (in a slideshow format)
Library News - OBOB
Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is starting soon for grades 3-5 and 6-8. OBOB is a voluntary, state-wide reading program in which students form teams of four, read from a set of 16 books, then participate in "battles" where they answer trivia questions about the books. OBOB is a great way to encourage children to read literature from a variety of genres and learn positive teamwork skills. You can also read the books to your child and listen to audiobooks! There is no fee for students to sign up and books can be checked out from the library.
Be on the lookout for OBOB sign up sheets that interested students bring home, or you can complete the digital form. Students may form their own team or sign up and I will place them on a team. OBOB will be an extracurricular activity taking place outside of school hours. I will need at least one parent coach to volunteer for each team. This involves hosting a meeting, (usually once a week or once every 2 weeks) helping the children decide what books to read, and helping them practice answering questions. If you are interested in coaching, please provide your name and contact information on the OBOB sign up sheet. Participation may depend on having enough parent volunteers. For more information, you can explore the OBOB website or contact me.

Village Kitchen
October is my favorite month to be in the kitchen and out in nature! In the Village School Kitchen we have been busy roasting rounds of delicata squash from Camas Swale Farm, processing bountiful basil from the Youth Farm, fermenting some killer kimchi with napa cabbage from our own school garden and sampling a sweet selection of apple varieties.
Yesterday we introduced students to Golden Delicious and Pink Lady apples. The overall favorite was the Golden Delicious! We look forward to trying more varieties throughout the month.

Thank you Hunter and Sagan from the 8th grade for helping us transfer today's delivery of flour and beans into storage bins.

On Monday we served up soft tacos. Atlas from the 2nd grade came through the lunch line with this statement: "Oh, I can smell the tacos. I love taco day! And look at my peppers! I took a lot because I love peppers!"

Kids yoga taught by Village School parent, Amanda White!

My name is Harrison Wiesert, and I have been playing piano for 25 years and have released multiple albums. My specialty is helping people of any skill level discover the piano through curiosity, play, and creative exploration.
I believe children learn best when they are given the freedom to explore, make discoveries, and develop their own relationship with what they are learning. My approach to piano embraces these Montessori principles by encouraging independence, self-expression, and learning through hands-on experience. Rather than simply following instructions, students are invited to listen, experiment, create, and discover what they can do for themselves.
