Administrator's Message

Dear Village School Families,

Only three weeks into the school year and we are in full swing! Students have taken field trips, are exploring nature at nearby parks, and are soaking up time on the playground in the sunny weather. I love this time of year with the chilly mornings and warm afternoons, the leaves changing colors, and my garden striving to ripen the last batch of tomatoes. It’s a perfect way to ease into the darker side of the season.

We hope all families are finding the perfect rhythm and routines for school days. We appreciate the decrease (compared to last spring), in the number of late arrivals! Each month we will share an all-school attendance report with you. Keep in mind that numbers may be low for September due to the variety of illness that ran throughout the school the first two weeks.

On the lighter side, the Walk-a-Thon is just a week away. The sponsored groups are visiting and students are gearing up for the big event. This week, be sure to check out the photo from the middle schooler's twinning day; it was quite a hit. The other bit of fun news is that the permanent basketball hoops were just installed. More improvements are on the way.

Thanks for being part of our community!

Shannon and Andy

Back to School Packet 2026-27

Please make sure to take a look at your Back to School Packet if you have not done so yet, and fill out all necessary school forms as soon as possible. Thank you!

Community Service Walkathon

With the Walk-a-thon coming up next week, fundraising is in full swing. If you missed last week's phone skit, please check it out here. We have help from 3 wonderful 5th graders. This year's goal is to raise at least $16,000. Half of this will help The Village Kitchen. The other half will support the following eight organizations, which were chosen for co-sponsorship due to their commitment to community values and ecological awareness.:

1st Grade: Nearby Nature

2nd Grade: Cascades Raptors Center

3rd Grade: Food for Lane County Gardens

4th Grade: Long Tom Watershed Council

5th Grade: Walama Restoration

6th Grade: Cascades Mycological Society

7th Grade: Whole Earth Nature School

8th Grade: Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council

Students have received pledge packets, but pledging can also be done with Online Pledge System: VillageWalkathon.org. Through the online platform, you can set up your own site, create a family team, and refer people to it via email, Text, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc. It's easy to circulate this to a circle of family members or friends. We hope that each family will participate in the walk-a-thon to the best of its ability. If each family raises $90, we will achieve our goal, but don’t stop at that. The more contributions you raise, the more successful we’ll be at achieving our goal of giving back to the community and helping our school.

This week we announced the Walk a Thon and the prize for the class that raises the most money, an eclectic kinetic sculpture that models wave dynamics. We hope you can help our students make waves in support of our kitchen and sponsored groups!.

Thank you very much for your participation!

We are looking for some parent volunteers to help out with this fantastic event! Please find a shift that works for you and put your name down to help here! You can also reach out to chrissy@eugenevillageschool.org with any questions.

Picture Days are Coming Up!

Photo Faces Northwest returns to the Village School this fall for Photo Days 2026.

This year, Photo Days are:

  • Mon., 10/12 for Kinder - 5th Grade

  • Wed., 10/14 for 6th - 8th Grade

We have also set aside a half day, Fri., 10/16, as an “overflow," if needed. We expect to complete photography by Wednesday.

Makeup & Retake Photo Day is Wed., 11/18. Makeup and retake photos will be available ahead of the December holidays.

Gallery viewing and ordering

You will receive a personalized link to your student's photo gallery once images are ready. You can view, adjust cropping, and order prints directly from the gallery portal. If your student was absent, or if you are dissatisfied with the images, you may sign up for Make-up & Retake Day photo. After Photo Days are complete, we will send a Make-up & Retake Day sign-up sheet out. Be sure to put your student on the schedule, if you would like them scheduled for a make-up or retake.

Preparation

Please help your student prepare ahead of time for Photo Day—clothing, grooming, and a cooperative attitude. Doing so helps us avoid lost time and the additional work of a retake.

Offerings and delivery

PFNW offers a range of package selections. Photos are delivered to your home address, usually 5–10 days from order placement. Expedited delivery is available for an added fee.

Many goods and services have seen price increases in recent years. We held our pricing steady through several years of rising costs. This year we have made some price adjustments, where needed, including in delivery charges, which are set by the carriers.

Group photo note

All groups come on an 8x10 sheet. This sizing allows us to fit the group to the class—larger classes are wider. Most groups will still be a 6x9 print, as last year's, but with a border. As always, you may contact Photo Faces Northwest with any of your questions or concerns at info@photofacesnorthwest.com. We’re always happy to hear from you.

Village Kitchen

Yesterday, 6th grade students, Olivia and Raina, joined our garden coordinator in the school garden to harvest tomatoes. Some were diced up for today's salad bar and students adorned their Yumm Bowls with them. The larger tomatoes will be sliced for tomorrow's sandwich lunch.

Thanks Maya and Addie for creating such a lovely menu board for Tuesday's lunch!

ASEP Instructors Needed

Hello!  I hope that everyone had a great Summer Break and that you are enjoying the 2026-2027 school year thus far.

I will be working as the After School Enrichment Program Coordinator again and am working on adding new classes, and additional classes for our younger students in grades 1 - 3.  I am happy to receive any input you may have.  I can be reached via email at bayer@eugenevillageschool.org  or you can text me at 805-975-7778.  If texting, please be sure to leave your name as you may not currently be in my address book.

As I said above, I would like to add new classes this year.  If you are interested in joining the ASEP team and would like to teach a class I would love to hear from you.  Here are some ideas that I have, and if you have a talent you'd like to share, but is not listed, let me know!

These are classes that have been taught in the past and classes I'd like to see explored.

1) Art

2) Ceramics (This may be taught by Donica)

3) Dance

4) Music - choir

5) Creative Writing - possibly make a journal and then write a creative story

6) Physical Education - play creative physically active games.

7) Coding

8) Science Experiments - volcanos, slime, bubbles, cornstarch & water, buoyancy & and density, etc. This would be great for younger students.

9) Gardening

10) Technology

11) Engineering - build bridges, towers and structures, catapults, etc

12) Drama / Acting

13) Handwork

14) Cooking / Health & Nutrition (This may be taught by Ms. Toña

15) Any other thoughts or ideas?

I would like to have three, 8 week sessions this year.  Tentative sessions will be Oct 12 to Dec 18, Jan 25 to March 12, and April 19 to June 1st.   The classes would begin when school gets out for the day.  You can lead a class for 1 to 1 1/2 hours and choose the day, or days, you would like to teach.  You can select the grades you are most comfortable working with.  Most classes will be combined to include more than one grade.  Class limit is 12 students, however that may be adjusted in either direction pending on the class and the instructors input.  We should have at least 8 students in the class.  In order to organize the ASEP and get started ASAP I will need to hear from you no later than September 22.  I will then send out a follow up letter by September 24 with information and answers to FAQ's.

Thank you so much for your interest in ASEP and for your consideration in leading a class.

Warmest Regards,

Rachel Burk-Bayer

ASEP Coordinator

Title 1 Reading/Math Services 2026-27

Every fall, winter and spring, our Title staff and classroom teachers administer reading and math assessments to each of our Kindergarten through 8th grade students.  If a student scores below the 30th percentile, she/he may be recommended by our team to receive instructional interventions in reading and/or math with their progress monitored.  At The Village School, all students receive up to 90 minutes of language arts and 60 minutes of math instruction each day.  If your child will be receiving additional reading or math instruction, his or her classroom teacher or the title 1 coordinator will notify you.

My name is Harrison Wiesert, and I have been playing piano for 25 years and have released multiple albums. My specialty is helping people of any skill level discover the piano through curiosity, play, and creative exploration.

I believe children learn best when they are given the freedom to explore, make discoveries, and develop their own relationship with what they are learning. My approach to piano embraces these Montessori principles by encouraging independence, self-expression, and learning through hands-on experience. Rather than simply following instructions, students are invited to listen, experiment, create, and discover what they can do for themselves.
