Administrator's Message
Greetings Village School Community!
Hoping this first day of October is treating you well! We are loving the cooler weather on the playground, the mist in the trees, and the sweetgum trees outside the south wing, which are absolutely glowing.
A few fall notes for the upcoming Walk-a-Thon:
Please note the change of schedule! The Walk-a-Thon will be held in the morning, rather than the afternoon, as it was in previous years.
See below for volunteer opportunities!
We will be providing sack lunches FOR STUDENTS WHO SIGN UP FOR THEM. Please be sure to pack a good lunch if your student doesn’t want the sack lunch.
1-3rd grade will be taking the bus back to school at the end of the event.
Don’t forget to help your student secure a few pledges to make the experience extra special AND to help their class win the frigate ship, USS Constitution, on display in the office! I got to wondering what the etymology of frigate was since it’s such an unusual sounding word. It turns out no one is really sure where the word came from past the early 1500's. Etymology Online posted this pleasant definition from Sir Geoffrey Callander’s Sea Passages in 1843:
[A] light nimble vessel built for speed; employed in particular for the gleaning of intelligence and the protection and assault of trade-routes. In battle the frigates took station on the disengaged side of the fleet, where they repeated signals, sped on messages, and succoured the distressed. [Sir Geoffrey Callender, "Sea Passages," 1943]
May your days be regulated and your distresses soundly succoured!
Sincerely,
Roz, Shannon, and Andy
Community Service Walk-a-Thon!
Pledging for the our Community Service Walk-a-thon is underway. Our goal is to raise at least $15,000. Half of this will help The Village Kitchen. The other half will support the following eight organizations, which were chosen for their commitment to community values and ecological awareness:
1st Grade: Nearby Nature
2nd Grade: Cascades Raptors Center
3rd Grade: Food for Lane County Gardens
4th Grade: Long Tom Watershed Council
5th Grade: Walama Restoration
6th Grade: Cascades Mycological Society
7th Grade: Whole Earth Nature School
8th Grade: McKenzie RiverTrust
Students have received pledge packets, but pledging can also be done with Online Pledge System: VillageWalkathon.org. Through the online platform, you can set up your own site, create a family team, and refer people to it via email, Text, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc. It's easy to circulate this to a circle of family members or friends. We hope that each family will participate in the walk-a-thon to the best of its ability. If each family raises $80, we will achieve our goal, but don’t stop at that. The more contributions you raise, the more successful we’ll be at achieving our goal of giving back to the community and helping our school.
The prize for the class that raises the most money is a replica of the frigate, USS Constitution built in 1797, on display in the office. Nicknamed Old Ironsides, the ship was built for speed and ruggedness and was famous for repelling cannon balls. We envision this metaphor applying to our US Constitution, that it may endure and help support the health of our democratic republic.
Thank you very much for your participation!
We are looking for some parent volunteers to help out with this fantastic event! Please reach out to chrissy@eugenevillageschool.org to let us know if you're interested.
Volunteering at the Village School
Be sure to watch your email, the Village Voice and the Village Vine for messages from Village Community Council, your class coordinator, your child's teacher and the Village School Kitchen, to see the volunteer needs that are coming up for you to take part in.
We are looking for Kitchen Volunteers! Please let Toña know if you can help. She can be reached at taguilar@eugenevillageschool.org or 541-510-8604. There are multiple ways that you can make a huge difference in our fabulous kitchen program! She is especially looking for volunteers to help out right after drop off and is also in need of volunteers to serve lunch from 11:30 - 1:00pm.
The Walkathon is fast approaching! This extra fun event is happening on 10/9 and we are looking for many helpers! Please sign up here.
We ask families to contribute 30-40 hours of volunteer hours per year, and single parent households to contribute 15-20 hours. Please stop by the office to fill out a volunteer packet if you have not already done so (Background checks are valid for 2 years). All parents have been entered into our online volunteer system, HelpCounter. This is where you can track your hours, and is the system you will be signing in on when you come to the office.
*Please always make sure to sign in, grab a volunteer badge, and sign out at the office when you volunteer. We have our new computer system set up in the office (see below). Please make sure to sign in there whether you are a volunteer or visitor.
Reach out to chrissy@eugenevillageschool.org or 541-345-7285 with any questions about volunteering!
Family Directories
Copies of the Family Directory are now available in the office. You are welcome to stop by and pick one up!

ASEP Update
Dear V.S. Families:
Thank you for your prompt and enthusiastic responses to the After School Enrichment Program. Most of the classes are already full, however feel free to sign your child up until the deadline of October 2. Often times a family will decline enrollment, or drop out the first week. If this happens I will select students who are on the waitlist. I will send out confirmation, or waitlist letters on Oct 3. Please keep an eye out for an email from me. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Regards,
Rachel Burk-Bayer

Village Kitchen
What an amazing crew of volunteers that have stepped up to contribute their energy to our unique food service program! It is a blessing to build community in the kitchen every school day. We make magic happen, infusing wholesome ingredients with love and positive energy as we feed students and staff. Thank you Friends for your ongoing support of our efforts.

Most days, we receive feedback from students. Often we get requests and comments such as these from last week:
"You should put a sugar glaze on the scones";
"I loved the stromboli but it would be even better with pepperoni in it";
"You should give us dragonfruit";
"When are we going to get avocado?";
"I want pad thai for lunch again";
"Yumm Bowls are my favorite lunch" and "I hate Yumm Bowls."
We love that kids feel comfortable sharing their feedback and hope that they continue to share their thoughts.

Our most heartwarming quote last week came from a 6th grade student. Kezton volunteered in the kitchen during service time on Thursday. He served stromboli and had the following to share: "I want to work here when I grow up. It just feels really happy to give people food."
