Administrator's Message
Dear Village School Families,
What a beautiful day for the first day of school. It was exciting to see so many smiling faces, old friends greeting one another, and lots of shiny new school shoes! Thank you to all who attended the New Parent Orientation today. We are glad you chose our school!
This is the time of year when teachers front load the school rules and classroom expectations. I’m sure your students engaged in fun activities today, and at the same time they were taught many rules, expectations, and procedures. We have several reminders for the adults as well, but for now I’ll share just two important policies:
Please read the Village School policy regarding animals on campus. Linked here. (and se below). Dogs are allowed on leashes before and after school; however, we ask that you be extra cautious when walking through crowded breezeways, and closely supervise interactions between your pet and those who want to engage with it.
Also, in addition to our Electronic Device policy that has been shared in previous newsletters, we want you to be aware that we do not allow students to make phone calls from the school office unless there is a special circumstance, and they have permission from office staff. If you need to contact your child during the day for any reason, contact the office and we will get a message to them. Otherwise, your child can contact you as soon as school is out.
On the lighter side, while students were getting briefed on school expectations, they also were able to check out some of the new playground equipment including the merry go round. We even had some adults trying it out!:

Animals on Campus Policy
Animals and pets are not permitted on campus during school hours, including inside school buildings, classrooms, and the playground.
Pets may be on school grounds during student drop-off and pick-up times only, provided that:
The animal is leashed or securely contained in a crate/carrier at all times.
The person responsible for the animal maintains control of it.
Animals must remain with their owner and may not be left unattended.
Animals may not enter school buildings.
Animals that display aggressive, threatening, or unsafe behavior must be removed from campus immediately.
Exceptions
This policy does not prohibit service animals that are permitted under applicable federal or state law. Service animals must remain under the control of their handler and may be subject to applicable school and district procedures.
Other exceptions may be granted by the school administration for approved educational activities, school events, or other circumstances determined appropriate; however, no animals are allowed in the kitchen or cafeteria.
Enforcement
School staff may ask an individual with an animal to remove the animal from campus if the animal is not in compliance with this policy or if its presence creates a safety or health concern.
Repeated violations may result in additional restrictions on bringing animals onto school grounds.

For late Arrivals, please use the entrance at the bottom of the stairs off of 35th Avenue and ring the intercom.

Operation School Bell
The Assistance League of Eugene supports a program of student assistance called Operation School Bell. This program supports families who are experiencing financial hardship to shop at Fred Meyer for school clothes or shoes for their children.
This year The Village School has 10 spots available. If you would like your child to be included in Operation School Bell this fall, please complete The Village School Parent/Guardian Request form. If more than 10 students request to be included in Operation School Bell we will run a lottery for the spots.
The form needs to be filled out and submitted by Monday, September 21st. Since spots are limited, if we have more than 10 people apply we will run a lottery and notify you if you receive a shopping spot or not.

Standard Response Protocol
We will continue to use the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) this year to help keep our school safe and prepared. Please take a moment to review the poster below and familiarize yourself with the four standard responses (Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate).
Village Kitchen
Welcome to a new school year everyone!
It was lovely seeing so many familiar and new faces at breakfast this morning.
We are thrilled to be back in the sweet school kitchen serving up delicious and nutritious meals for students and staff.
For our first lunch we will be preparing the ever popular Greek Pasta Salad alongside some fresh, local corn on the cob and sweet watermelon. Salad greens and basil come from our friends at Horton Road Organics and tomatoes are from Camas Swale Farm.
For our first breakfast this morning we baked up blueberry muffins, offered almonds and a choice of fresh fruit. Yum! Upriver Organics sells us five gallon buckets of their beautiful blueberries for muffin making all year long!
We value meals made from scratch using local and organic ingredients. Thanks to rock star kitchen staff and parent volunteers we create magic in the kitchen every school day.

Volunteering at the Village School
Welcome to a fresh new school year!
We ask families to contribute 30-40 hours of volunteer hours per year, and single parent households to contribute 15-20 hours. Many of our programming and events are made possible by your support. Thank you for supporting our school!
We are asking all volunteers to fill out our new online form and background check for the 2026-27 school year. Register to be a Village School volunteer here.

Title 1 Reading/Math Services 2026-27
Every fall, winter and spring, our Title staff and classroom teachers administer reading and math assessments to each of our Kindergarten through 8th grade students. If a student scores below the 30th percentile, she/he may be recommended by our team to receive instructional interventions in reading and/or math with their progress monitored. At The Village School, all students receive up to 90 minutes of language arts and 60 minutes of math instruction each day. If your child will be receiving additional reading or math instruction, his or her classroom teacher or the title 1 coordinator will notify you.
