Administrator's Message

Greetings Village School Community!

Here’s one of my (Roz) favorite poems about fall, written by Rainer Maria Rilke:

Lord: it is time. The summer was immense.

Lay your shadow on the sundials

and let loose the wind in the fields.

Bid the last fruits to be full;

give them another two more southerly days,

press them to ripeness, and chase

the last sweetness into the heavy wine.

Whoever has no house now will not build one anymore.

Whoever is alone now will remain so for a long time,

will stay up, read, write long letters,

and wander the avenues, up and down,

restlessly, while the leaves are blowing.

This poem tells us to enjoy these last breaths of the sweetness and warmth of the summer, to pack in the last of our harvests, and to recede to the warmth of our homes while the weather blusters. I used to be a person who loved to jump right from labor day into winter holiday music, but more recently I’ve begun to really dig into the vibe of fall–the slanted golden rays, the perfectly cool evenings, and the golden green afternoons. This liminal place passing from one extreme to its opposite is the perfect time to reflect, take stock, and make whatever corrections are necessary.

Ok, enough of that dew-y-eyed prose, back to our regular content!

  1. We’ve had some unexpected changes this year to the walk-a-thon schedule. We will not have access to the 4J busses to bring grades 1-3 students back to VS for pick up! We don’t have all of the wrinkles ironed out yet, but you should expect to be picking students up on October 10th at the South Eugene H.S. track after the event. Most students will not be returning to school on that day.

  2. On that note, please check in with your student and help them get some pledges! It’s so much more fun to walk if you’ve got a few pledges to work toward.

  3. Picture day is scheduled for this Thursday and Friday. Please turn your orders in as soon as possible if you haven’t already done so!

We hope that you’re having a fantastic fall!

Sincerely,

Roz, Shannon, and Andy

The Walk-a-Thon is coming up next Thursday, October 10th! In case you missed it, our wonderful 5th graders produced an audio Walk-a-Thon message.

Walk-a-thon pledging has begun in earnest. Pledging can happen in person using the paper forms, or online through VillageWalkathon.org. The online platform lets you reach out to contacts via email, text, and social media. The Walk-a-thon is more fun if students have a fundraising goal for their laps. Our goal is to raise at least $12,000. Half of this will help The Village Kitchen. The other half will support the following eight organizations, which were chosen for co-sponsorship due to their commitment to community values and ecological awareness:

1st Grade: Nearby Nature

2nd Grade: Cascades Raptors Center

3rd Grade: Food for Lane County Gardens

4th Grade: NextStep Recycling

5th Grade: Walama Restoration

6th Grade: Chintimini Wildlife Rescue

7th Grade: Whole Earth Nature School

8th Grade: McKenzie RiverTrust

Last year, students in grades 1-3 returned from the SEHS track to our site via 4J bus. This is not possible this year, so we will have families pick up students from the track. We will be sending a form out to confirm pick up from the track.

Here's the prize for the class that raises the most money, a globe made of semi precious stones:

Thank you very much for your participation!

We are looking for some parent volunteers to help out with this fantastic event! Please reach out to chrissy@eugenevillageschool.org to let us know if you're interested.

Enrichment classes offered:

Creative Writing / Max Ritzow - grades 6-8, Tuesdays, 3:05 - 4:05, (Library)

In this course, students will grow their writing and storytelling skills through fun group activities, discussions, and individual projects. Classes will often begin with some variety of free writing activity, and students will have the opportunity to share with the group (if they feel so inclined). Students will have the opportunity to write short stories entirely of their own devising, and receive constructive feedback. It is my sincere hope that during our time together students will experience the freedom and joy of creative writing.

Handwork / Anna Szmit - Grades 5 - 8, Wednesdays, 3:15 - 4:45 (Handwork Room)

This class gives students the opportunity to expand upon their handwork skills, while getting to create new projects not normally made in traditional handwork class. Students will be able to choose their own projects, from knitting, crocheting, and hand sewing. If you are looking to learn something new, or improve your other handwork skills, join after school handwork!

Painting / Frédérique Château - Grades 6 to 8, Thursdays 3:15-4:45 (Art Room 101), limit 8 students.

The first several classes will be spent outside on school grounds to paint in the plein air style using watercolors and acrylics. As the weather turns cold and wet, we will move to the art room for the last six classes. Each student will create one medium-size painting of their own design using acrylic paint on a canvas panel. The young artists will explore composition, color mixing and various painting techniques. They will have the opportunity to apply their own vision and artistic voice to create a very personal artwork.

Volunteer Needs

We are off to a great beginning to the school year! Thank you to everyone who has turned in their volunteer forms, jumped in the kitchen, classrooms to get a head start on their volunteer hours. In the fall, there are a few events and days that we need volunteer support for. The Walkathon is just around the corner and is a fun-filled afternoon of students racing their hearts out to support some fantastic causes. We are also looking for 1 more volunteer to help with Picture Retake Day. Please see the sign up sheet below and get your name down for a shift that looks good to you. 5th Grade needs 1 more parent to be a Class Coordinator. Please let me know if you are interested in this role. Thank you!

We ask families to contribute 40 hours of volunteer hours per year, and single parent households to contribute 20 hours.

*Please make sure to always sign in, grab a volunteer badge, and sign out at the office when you volunteer!

Please reach out to chrissy@eugenevillageschool.org with any questions about volunteering!

Village Kitchen

This week students and staff got to sample kiwi berries grown here in Oregon. Also known as hardy kiwis, these fruits are a miniature version of a kiwi without the fuzzy skin. The vast majority of students had never tried them before and loved them! Big thanks to our sixth grade helpers, Sagan and Kai, who measured out the brown rice for today's lunch. They learned how to use the tare function on our scale for accurate weighing.

We have had a number of parent volunteers out this week on trips or with sick kids. If your schedule is flexible at times and you are willing to be on our sub list when we need last minute help, please let me know. We could really use someone tomorrow morning after drop off to help dice potatoes for roasting!

Donation Support for the Village Kitchen

Thank you so much to all the families who have turned in their supply fees, as well as kitchen donations!

Although Community Eligibility covers 90% of the school meal fees, it leaves the Village Kitchen to cover the remainder of the cost. We are still seeking donation support from families to help make up the extra 10% cost. If you can donate $50, $100, $200 to the Village Kitchen, you can help us maintain our commitment to locally sourced, mostly organic ingredients. You can pay this via cash or check in the office or via this online form. Thank you for your support!

Library News - OBOB

Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is starting soon for grades 3-5 and 6-8. OBOB is a voluntary, state-wide reading program in which students form teams of four, read from a set of 16 books, then participate in "battles" where they answer trivia questions about the books. OBOB is a great way to encourage children to read literature from a variety of subjects and genres. You can also read the books to your child and listen to audiobooks! There is no fee for students to sign up and books can be checked out from the library.

Be on the lookout for OBOB sign up sheets that interested students bring home. Students may form their own team or sign up and I will place them on a team. OBOB will be an extracurricular activity taking place outside of school hours. I will need at least one parent for each team to be their coach. This involves hosting a meeting, (usually once a week or once every 2 weeks) helping the children decide what books to read, and helping them practice answering questions. If you are interested in coaching, please provide your name and contact information on the OBOB sign up sheet. Participation may depend on having enough parent volunteers. For more information, you can explore the OBOB website, watch an introductory video from Cedar Mill Library, or contact me.
