Administrator's Message
Greetings Village School Community!!!
Fall has arrived in every way- the weather is chilling, the leaves are changing green to gold, the days are shorter than the nights, the discarded sweaters and jackets are piling up on the playground, the smell of nutmeg and cinnamon and woodsmoke are wafting on the breeze…
AND it’s almost PICTURE DAY!! Please be sure to check out your picture order form from Photo Faces Northwest (such a scrupulous name!) Orders are due by October 1st, so be sure to take a good look at the offerings! You don’t want to miss the chance at this age-old tradition…there’s nothing quite like the old archival green screen to capture a unique and magical moment in time, one perhaps, like these special second grade gems of our admins.
From left to right, note:
the unmistakable gaucho suit (1978 - Shannon),
the scarcely worn glasses (1983 - Roz)
the enormous butterfly collars (1971 - Andy)
Also, last week we launched our Community Service Walk-a-Thon with an interview of Village School historian (AKA: Grades 7-8 teacher, Justin Boe). The kids enjoyed several laughs from the historian's antics and erudition, see more about the Walk-a-Thon below.
On another less joyful note: We regret to announce that our recently hired Spanish teacher needed to move on so we have reposted the position. We did some reorganization based on feedback from our Spanish program committee and broke the job into two parts, 1st-4th and 5th-8th. We are working diligently on an interim plan to continue with our student’s education in the Spanish language while we conduct interviews. We feel confident that the correct applicant will be in place in the next few weeks. Thank you for your patience as we work this out! Feel free to contact Shannon or Roz with any questions or concerns and share the job posting with anyone you think might be interested!
We hope that you’re having a glorious start of the school year! Stay cool or warm, whichever task is being set to you by Demeter’s transient mood this time of year.
Roz, Shannon and Andy
It's official. Our Community Service Walk-a-thon is underway! It's one of our truly fun events for grades 1 through 8. Students set realistic lap goals based on age and development. Our goal is to raise at least $12,000. Half of this will help The Village Kitchen. The other half will support the following eight organizations, which were chosen for co-sponsorship due to their commitment to community values and ecological awareness:
1st Grade: Nearby Nature
2nd Grade: Cascades Raptors Center
3rd Grade: Food for Lane County Gardens
4th Grade: NextStep Recycling
5th Grade: Walama Restoration
6th Grade: Chintimini Wildlife Rescue
7th Grade: Whole Earth Nature School
8th Grade: McKenzie RiverTrust
Students have received pledge packets, but pledging can also be done with Online Pledge System: VillageWalkathon.org. Through the online platform, you can set up your own site, create a family team, and refer people to it via email, Text, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc. It's easy to circulate this to a circle of family members or friends. We hope that each family will participate in the walk-a-thon to the best of its ability. If each family raises $50, we will achieve our goal, but don’t stop at that. The more contributions you raise, the more successful we’ll be at achieving our goal of giving back to the community and helping our school.
This week we announced the Walk a Thon and the prize for the class that raises the most money, a globe made of semi precious stones:
Thank you very much for your participation!
We are looking for some parent volunteers to help out with this fantastic event! Please reach out to chrissy@eugenevillageschool.org to let us know if you're interested.
Volunteer Needs
We are off to a great beginning to the school year! Thank you to everyone who has turned in their volunteer forms, jumped in the kitchen and classrooms to get a head start on their volunteer hours. In the fall, there are a few events and days that we need volunteer support for. The Walkathon is just around the corner and is a fun-filled afternoon of students racing their hearts out to support some fantastic causes. Please see the sign up sheet below and get your name down for a shift that looks good to you. We are also looking for 1 more 5th Grade Class Coordinator. Please let me know if you are interested in this role. Thank you!
We ask families to contribute 40 hours of volunteer hours per year, and single parent households to contribute 20 hours.
*Please make sure to always sign in, grab a volunteer badge, and sign out at the office when you volunteer!
Please reach out to chrissy@eugenevillageschool.org with any questions about volunteering!

Creative Writing / Max Ritzow - grades 6-8, Tuesdays, 3:05 - 4:05, (Library)
In this course, students will grow their writing and storytelling skills through fun group activities, discussions, and individual projects. Classes will often begin with some variety of free writing activity, and students will have the opportunity to share with the group (if they feel so inclined). Students will have the opportunity to write short stories entirely of their own devising, and receive constructive feedback. It is my sincere hope that during our time together students will experience the freedom and joy of creative writing.
Sewing Machine Fun! / Sarah Lewenberg - Grades 5 - 8, Wednesdays, 3:05-4:20,
(Ex-Computer Lab) Limit 8 students.
Students will learn how to use sewing machines to create projects. Students will start with a simple bag and then pick fabric for our second and third (if time allows) :. They will use all the notions and tools needed for fun sewing projects.
Ceramics / Donica Beath-Bigongiari - Grades 2- 8. Tuesdays 2nd Grade, Wednesdays, Grades 3-4, Thursdays Grades 5 - 8, select one day only. (Spanish Room)
In the Ceramics class, students will explore hand building techniques such as pinch, coil, and slab; as well as using wooden, plaster, or paper molds, and Sgraffito. Students will have the opportunity to make pots, cups, tiles, shakers, monsters, and sculpture.
Handwork / Anna Szmit - Grades 5 - 8, Wednesdays, 3:15 - 4:45 (Handwork Room)
Limit 10 students.
This class gives students the opportunity to expand upon their handwork skills, while getting to create new projects not normally made in traditional handwork class. Students will be able to choose their own projects, from knitting, crocheting, and hand sewing. If you are looking to learn something new, or improve your other handwork skills, join after school handwork!
Painting / Frédérique Château - Grades 6 to 8, Thursdays 3:15-4:45 (Art Room 101), limit 8 students.
The first several classes will be spent outside on school grounds to paint in the plein air style using watercolors and acrylics. As the weather turns cold and wet, we will move to the art room for the last six classes. Each student will create one medium-size painting of their own design using acrylic paint on a canvas panel. The young artists will explore composition, color mixing and various painting techniques. They will have the opportunity to apply their own vision and artistic voice to create a very personal artwork.
Village Kitchen
This weekend Upriver Farm delivered purple cauliflower and orange bell pepper for use this week. Yum! Both of these vegetables are high in antioxidants which strengthen the immune system.
Big thanks to the new and returning volunteers who are contributing time every week to ensure the success of our program. What a fun crew we have this year!
Gracias Maestra Sarah for donating excess produce from your garden this week - tomatoes, eggplant, winter squash and spicy peppers in abundance!
The October breakfast and lunch menus will be posted on our school website later this week. Paper copies will be available in the office as well.

Donation Support for the Village Kitchen
Thank you so much to all the families who have turned in their supply fees, as well as kitchen donations!
Although Community Eligibility covers 90% of the school meal fees, it leaves the Village Kitchen to cover the remainder of the cost. We are still seeking donation support from families to help make up the extra 10% cost. If you can donate $50, $100, $200 to the Village Kitchen, you can help us maintain our commitment to locally sourced, mostly organic ingredients. You can pay this via cash or check in the office or via this online form. Thank you for your support!
Movement News
Good Day to all Village Families,
A happy belated return, reunion, and renewal! I am so happy to see all the children once more. To my many new parents and students, Welcome! To our whole community, It is my honor to be the Movement Teacher for the Village School. This will be my 6th year in service to our community, with many lessons learned. Each year I grow more authentic and relatable to the children. Each year I sense more co-operation, consideration, and community. Children mostly arrive in my classroom ready, willing to learn, imagine and co-create a Movement adventure that spans 1st - 8th grade. Each day I diligently sense how each activity will improve the individual, class, and overall journey of adolescence.
My goals change year to year but my consistent theme is viewing the year in seasons and noticing the way students develop as a community. The word that inspires me most about this time of the year is, Returning. Autumn is about Returning to our school. Reacquainting ourselves with relationships, traditions, and guidelines. I aspire to set in stone the right shape and rhythm to allow each class to progress through the year. Students get small previews into bigger unit blocks, encounter a few grade specific activities, and enjoy our previous years' favorites. It matters to me not only what we play but also how we play. I will be shaping my grading this term by the virtues Middle Schoolers aspire to demonstrate, and then create a class recognition system any time students of all grades express those qualities.
This year I hope to initiate some really beautiful projects. While emotions can run high in Movement, I am committed to the betterment of all temperaments, athletic potentials, and all students in my classes. It's my goal that your child will always be greeted, appreciated, accepted and supported in our journey together.
This year I intend to send class letters out, so keep an eye out for what is in store for your child's grade this Fall.
