Administrator's Message

Greetings Village School Community!

It’s May Day week! Halfway between the Spring equinox and Summer solstice, this is the time of year when the bees are flying, the flowers are blooming, and the greens are popping! This weekend after I was enjoying my freshly mowed lawn, I wondered to myself why so many spring leaves are green here, and not some other color. I looked it up and the theory I read is pretty interesting…

Around 700 million years ago, the first ancestors of plants (aquatic algae) were beginning to form in bodies of water. They grew underneath a layer of halobacteria (which, despite its name is actually NOT a bacteria but an archaea) that was red or purple in color. Because the surface dwelling halobacteria was red or purple, it absorbed the green light, allowing the red and blue light to filter through to the aquatic algae. The algae was green because that was the most advantageous color for absorbing red and blue light. If that layer of halobacteria had been yellow or green, our leaves might have been mostly red or purple! Trippy!

Hopefully you are gearing up to come celebrate the booming greens with us this Thursday afternoon at our May Day celebration! Check in with Chrissy in the office to see if there are any volunteer opportunities, if you feel so inclined. It’s bound to be a great day.

Sincerely,

Roz, Shannon, and Andy

Volunteering

Please reach out to chrissy@eugenevillageschool.org with any questions about volunteering! We ask families to contribute 40 hours of volunteer hours per year, and single parent households to contribute 20 hours.

  • May Day is tomorrow! Please sign up to volunteer at this wonderful school day event.

  • Our Handwork teachers are looking for some parent volunteers to read stories to the kids while they sew and knit their creations. Please email Chrissy at chrissy@eugenevillageschool.org if interested.

  • Brett is looking for a couple of adults to help with digging holes to install a couple of pet waste stations.

  • Ms Frédérique is looking for one or two volunteers to help hem a set of small tablecloths for the art room. Please email frederique@eugenevillageschool.org if interested.

May Day

Our annual May Day celebration is TOMORROW! We will need plenty of flowers to make Flower Crowns and to adorn the Maypole. Please share the bounty of your gardens - we will have buckets placed outside the office on the morning of May 1st.

Thank you so much to everyone who signed up to help! We need just a few more volunteers for this sweet event: 1 person to help set up tables and tarps at 8:45am and a few more people to help take down the Maypole on Friday 5/2 at the end of the school day. It's an easy and fun way to meet your volunteer hours.

Commemorative Tiles for Our Courtyard Mural!

Check out our commemorative tiles to help fundraise for our courtyard mural. The tiles offer a great opportunity to share a legacy with our school. The tiles come in two sizes and businesses can upload their logos. They will be situated under the roof by the entrance to the Commons, right next to the location of the mural.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Village School Kitchen

This term we are joined by five students from the University of Oregon. Colby, Audrey, Keara, Sydney and Amanda are taking a Food and School course through the School of Education and have chosen to complete their practicum in the Village School Kitchen. We are thrilled that future teachers are learning about the many ways that food intersects with schools.

UO Education student Audrey helps Jasper and Saul from the 4th grade as they desticker mandarins

A lot of love and energy goes into preparing the food students and staff eat every school day!

Thank you Robin for chopping, washing and spinning MANY heads of organic red leaf and romaine lettuce for everyone's salads today.

Thank you Debbie for washing and slicing 40 lbs of organic navel oranges so students and staff could get their share of vitamin C at lunch.

Thank you Danielle for making a delicious citrus herb vinaigrette and a tamari sesame ginger dressing as well for today's condiment line.

And a big THANK YOU to families that support our unique program by having your children eat school meals!
