Administrator's Message

Greetings Village School Community!

In 1676 Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, an uneducated Dutch tradesman, discovered a relatively simple way to make a microscope lens that could, with great patience and ample curiosity, magnify a specimen 200 times its actual size. Using his tiny glass lenses, Leeuwenhoek was the first to observe single-celled organisms. Imagine the shock and skepticism that must have transpired in the minds of the Royal Society when this fabric merchant began sending them letters describing the antics of the “cavorting wee beasties” and “very little living animalcules, very prettily a-moving…like a pike does through the water.”

Despite the fact that he had previously enjoyed a reputation as a credible observer with the Royal Society, Van Leeuwenhoek found himself thoroughly maligned after describing these animalcules. It took four years, a team of dedicated jurors and doctors, and an English vicar to see Van Leeuwenhoek’s observations vindicated.

We’re no stranger to cavorting wee beasties around here and we are hoping that you all are faring well amongst the sea of little living animalcules floating all around us at present! Today the office folks told us that we had more than sixty students and seven staff members out of school. It’s not a record number, but it’s probably very close.

Wishing you the happiest last days of school before winter break!

Roz, Andy, and Shannon

Annual Giving Campaign

These are samples of the Artist's, Kari Johnson, work projected onto our Courtyard wall.

This year’s annual giving campaign aims to recognize our 25th Anniversary with a new mural to cover the south wall of our courtyard.  Our vision/theme for the mural is to capture in a big epic flowing "Diego Rivera" style of the "9 Year Arc" of the Village School experience, spanning kindergarten to 8th grade. The mural will feature rites of passage from each of the grades such as the Rose Ceremony in 1st grade, raising salmon in 4th grade, Greek Games in 5th grade, and Shakespeare in 8th grade,

We envision an in-depth design process with painting to begin in late Spring. The artist, Kari Johnson, has done several impressive and noteworthy murals around town. The artworks shown represent samples of her work projected onto the south wall of the courtyard.

Fundraising Goals

We are hoping to raise $12,000 for this campaign. The total cost is expected to be $28,000. Parent Council has already $5,000 to the effort, and we expect other 25th Anniversary fundraisers to bring in an additional $11,000. Please join us in our efforts to create a fabulous mural for our new courtyard!

Absences and After School Events Policy

Here is an overview of our attendance policy:

Absences

Please let the office know as soon as possible of any absence by email: office@eugenevillageschool.org or phone: 541-345-7285

The following are accepted reasons for absences:

1)Student illness, health condition, mental or behavioral health, or medical appointment. Administrators may ask for documentation from a medical provider regarding an ongoing illness or health condition.

2)Family emergency, including but not limited to a death or illness in the family.

3) Court proceeding.

Oregon Revised Statutes regarding attendance -  English / Spanish

10 Day Drop

A student will be dropped from the Village School if absent for 10 consecutive days, no matter what the reason is (with the one exception of COVID isolation or other extended illness that has been excused). This includes all excused and/or unexcused absences, including extended planned absences.

Absences and Extra-Curricular Activities

If a student misses school for any reason, they are not allowed to participate in after-school events on the same day.

Tardiness

If your child is not able to be in the classroom by 8:25am, they should sign in at the office and take a late pass to give to their teacher. Kindergarteners are in morning circle until 8:45am. If your kindergartener arrives between 8:25 and 8:45, please ask a staff member to accompany you, and to let your child into the classroom. Lateness is considered unexcused unless it is for an appointment, inclement weather, or other emergency.

Students Arriving/Leaving During the School Day

Anytime students arrive or leave during the school day they must sign in/out in the office.

Students may only leave with a guardian or with an adult listed in our information system as an emergency contact. Please park and come into the office to sign out your student and to give an early release pass to their teacher. On rare occasions, administration may work with a parent/guardian to authorize the student to leave without a parent/guardian or emergency contact picking the student up.
