Administrators' Message
Dear Village School Families,
As school gets closer to opening for hybrid instruction, we are working on implementing various measures to ensure student and staff safety. In addition to plans for physical distancing, hand washing, and mask wearing, we are getting our site ready for safe indoor classes. Since COVID-19 is mainly an airborne disease, we are giving special priority to classroom ventilation.
At this time, neither the CDC nor OHA have published a ventilation standard for classrooms during this pandemic. However, several other states and university academics have recommended changing the air in classrooms four to six times in an hour*. A single box fan operating in a window at low speed can achieve roughly six changes of air per hour in classrooms the size of ours. Oddly enough, we benefit from having an older building. All of our classrooms have lots of windows and most have exterior doors. Over Spring Break, contractors will be installing new operable windows in each of the lower wing classrooms to increase cross ventilation. Each teacher will have fans to facilitate high levels of air flow.
You may ask, fresh air is great, but what happens when skies turn really hot, cold, or smoky: Can our HVAC system temper all of this fresh air? For these situations, we are planning on using portable systems to filter classroom airspaces four to six times per hour. So whether fans or filters are preferable, our teachers will have a choice of either option.
A final alternative we have discussed before is to have more outdoor classroom capacity. In addition to getting several large tents, the Outdoor Classroom is nearing completion. In fact, let us know if you are interested in helping Justin Ross, contractor and third grade parent, in this vital project.
Good ventilation is just part of our safety plan for returning to campus. We will let you know more about additional safety measures as we get closer to reopening. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Best to you all,
Andy Peara
Executive Director

Village School Kitchen
Orange you glad you it is citrus season?
Thanks to everyone who sent in notes and photos of their home citrus tastings. Watch your inbox for this week's kitchen newsletter for a slideshow revealing the winning orange!
Today you will see numerous smaller citrus varieties in your food bags. This week we are featuring four varieties of mandarins and a tangerine. We were hoping to have enough to provide one for each student, but we came up a few short of a couple of the mandarins. Every family got at least one of every kind and extras of others.
Many of your children enjoyed making No-Bake Cookies this past week. We hope they shared some with you.
Noah mixes up some no-bake cookies!
Even a few Village School teachers we inspired to make them as well. Kitchen staff got to participate in a contest between teachers who made their own variations with the basic No-Bake Cookie recipe. Thank you Jesse, Justin, Sue, and Shannon for sharing. Yum!

WANTED: Village School Library books!
I need your help getting back Village School library books that were checked out last year. Some students still had books checked out when in-person school ended in March, and several families came in and checked out books while school was closed. Please check around your home for any books that belong to the Village School. They will have a label on the back that says “The Village School” with a barcode.
There will be a bin outside the office to return books. If you cannot get them back to school, please let me know and we can make other arrangements to have books picked up. Please also contact me if you know books have been damaged or lost. Thank you for your help keeping our library stocked with amazing books!
