Administrators' Message Dear Village School Families,
Tomorrow on February 9th the majority of The Village School staff will receive their first vaccination. The second booster shot is scheduled for March 9th. The waiting period after the booster shot for immunization to take place is 14 days.
The Village School’s reopening committee and school safety committees are meeting this Wednesday and Friday, respectively. Our pressing topic is to ensure we align our policy and procedures with requirements and guidelines set by the Oregon Department of Education for Limited In-person Instruction (LIPI), Outdoor Learning, and hybrid model of instruction.
Outdoor Learning is different from a hybrid school model. Outdoor Learning was designed by ODE to allow for curriculum related instruction to occur outside. Outdoor Learning with Jennifer Horn’s second graders begins on February 17. Emily Swensons’s first grade class will begin Outdoor Learning on Friday, February 26. As a school we are getting ready for a hybrid school model with two of our youngest class of students. This will allow Jennifer and Emily to practice the protocols necessary for a safe hybrid experience with their students. By using Outdoor Learning with the young children they will have structured programs outside with their peers and teacher and it will also serve as a stepping stone for being prepared for hybrid learning when that day arrives.
With the advent of the staff receiving their vaccinations we are getting closer to beginning the process of gradually rolling grades on to campus for hybrid instruction. Later this week, we hope to communicate more information about when we will commence hybrid instruction.
An important reminder: Although many educators and other essential workers in Lane County are receiving vaccinations, all of the safety protocols must be followed and will be enforced at public schools - all staff and students shall wear a properly fitted mask, practice physical distancing and good hand washing hygiene. All parents and guardians may visit the office by appointment only, and must wear a mask. Please make every effort to conduct school related business by telephone or email. Of course when you have a prearranged drop-off and pick-up for your child whether for LIPI or Outdoor Learning please follow the protocols and procedures. And remember, always wear a mask as soon as you step onto the school grounds.
Thank you for your patience and understanding and your ongoing contributions to the welfare of our entire school community. Together we can remain safe as we develop systems to bring students back to school.

Village School Kitchen
It is citrus season! For the past few weeks, I have been working with friends at Organically Grown Company to figure out the best varieties of citrus to share with Village School Families.
Over the course of the next two weeks, we invite you to join us in our February Citrus Tasting Event! In tomorrow's food bags you will find five varieties of oranges. From the beautiful Mango Valencia, to an Heirloom Navel, they will bring some sunshine and Vitamin C into your kitchens.
OGC is sending along a handout for each family with information on each variety along with room for your tasting notes. Remember our awesome Apple Taste-Off in the autumn? The Mutsu apple was the overall school favorite, though each variety had fervent fans. Now we want to hear which citrus is your favorite! We encourage each family to slice this week's five orange varieties into enough pieces for your family members. Find a time when you can sit together to taste and talk about each orange. You may want a glass of water to clear the palate in between varieties. Write your tasting notes down, let us know which one was your favorite and share photos! Next week we will post which variety was the overall favorite along with a few photos.
Eat well and be well!

WANTED: Village School Library books!
I need your help getting back Village School library books that were checked out last year. Some students still had books checked out when in-person school ended in March, and several families came in and checked out books while school was closed. Please check around your home for any books that belong to the Village School. They will have a label on the back that says “The Village School” with a barcode.
There will be a bin outside the office to return books. If you cannot get them back to school, please let me know and we can make other arrangements to have books picked up. Please also contact me if you know books have been damaged or lost. Thank you for your help keeping our library stocked with amazing books!
